Peaceful Fortress 10x17x10

After receiving the grant from the arts organization NoMAA, I began to explore a new creative direction. I started making sculptures with the notion of creating pieces with removable connecting parts that interact with the interior spaces. The compatibility of forms and spaces between and around them are challenging. It is a physical interpretation of much in life. While we all have our individuality, how we make our mark on others and the environment is of great importance. "Good Connections" the title of this series, also comments on the solitude of creating as a visual artist, and the difficulty but necessity, of getting your work out into the world.

Peaceful Fortress (inside view)

While these sculptures do reference the vessel, unlike many of my past works, the insides are an integral part of the experience. In many ways they compliment and contradict the outside. The work challenges the existence of a difference between the two and is meant to create a dialogue.

Some of these pieces are diptychs that occupy the same space but relate, and are necessary to one another, much the way we are stronger because of our personal relationships to people and the world. The way nature is more profound when you see the mountain against the sky for example. Its all about complimentary parts of the whole and the internal, external and negative spaces around objects that create even more synergy and beauty.

I find the physical connections to be an interesting sculptural component creating a tension and necessity in an otherwise peaceful coexisting relationship much like what occurs in most human interaction.

Outside the Box 19x12x4

"Outside the Box" was in a 2010 national juried exhibition at the Focus Gallery in The University of Florida. It was juried by Linda Arbuckle and John Byrd. The exhibition was called "Currents, contemporary ceramics" and a catalog was produced with 31 works by 31 artists.
These next two images are functional pieces are currently on view at a show called "Made in Clay" at The Jane Hartsook Gallery in NYC. This gallery is housed in Greenwich House Pottery which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary this year. I have been on the faculty there for 8 years.
